The Impact of Climate Change and Deforestation

Climate change and deforestation are major global challenges that disrupt ecosystems and threaten communities worldwide. Rising temperatures, shifting weather patterns, and rising sea levels are just the start. Deforestation not only destroys natural habitats and decreases biodiversity but also increases greenhouse gases, contributing further to climate issues. This destruction leads to community displacement, reduced forest resources, soil erosion, and degraded water quality. Immediate action is required to mitigate these interconnected threats and protect our planet's future. Through sustainable initiatives and reforestation, we aim to reverse these trends and safeguard the environment for future generations.

Better Globe Forestry's tree plantation in Kenya

Enhancing Environments and Communities Through Tree Planting

Planting trees in rural Kenya and Uganda achieves more than just reforestation—it fosters sustainable communities. Better Globe's tree planting efforts not only help absorb carbon dioxide and combat climate change but also stabilize soils and conserve water. Beyond environmental benefits, these trees provide local farmers with income opportunities through the sale of fruit and other tree products, supporting local economies. Furthermore, Better Globe enhances these efforts by investing in education and microfinance, empowering communities to build a self-sustaining future.

Seeds of Change by Better Globe

In lands where arid winds have swept,
Where hope seemed thin and vigour wept,
A single seed in soil embeds,
Beneath the sun, its tender spreads.

This seed, a beacon in the dust,
Fueled not just by water, but by trust,
Planted by hands that dream of green,
In hearts where hope has seldom been.

From tiny sprouts to branches wide,
Each tree stands proud, with might implied,
Absorbing carbon, giving shade,
In their leaves, the breezes played.

But not just trees in earth do root,
With every seed, ambitions shoot,
For schools arise, and knowledge flows,
Where education meets those who chose.

Microfinance empowers all,
Farmers rise and stand tall,
Communities thrive, children read,
From one small seed, great forests seed.

For every donor who believes,
In planting hope, in sowing leaves,
You fuel the change, you help impart,
For earth, for people, you do your part.

Join our mission, extend your hand,
Together we'll heal the land,
Invest in life, in love, in laughter,
For a greener globe, forever after.

East African Governments Commit to Reforestation

Ambitious Tree Planting Goals in Kenya and Uganda

Both the Kenyan and Ugandan governments are actively addressing climate change and deforestation. Kenya aims to increase its tree cover from 12% to 30% by 2032, requiring the cultivation of 15 billion seedlings to restore degraded landscapes. This initiative is pivotal for biodiversity, combating climate change, and enhancing local communities’ resilience.

In Uganda, the situation is similarly urgent, with only 12.4% forest cover remaining. The government plans to plant 40 million trees annually to restore 2.5 million hectares by 2030, involving citizens in nationwide tree planting efforts.

Impact on Local Communities

These measures are critical as environmental degradation directly affects livelihoods. In Kenya, climate change has already led to significant livestock losses and impacted millions of people, intensifying food insecurity and economic vulnerability. Uganda’s efforts also aim to mitigate these challenges by rejuvenating land and securing sustainable futures.

These initiatives underline the governments’ dedication to sustainable environmental management and their proactive approach to restoring ecological balance and supporting community welfare.

Better Globe's Role in Sustainable Development

Combating Climate Change Through Reforestation and Community Empowerment

Our partner, Better Globe Forestry Ltd. (BGF), has been at the forefront of dryland afforestation and sustainable development in Kenya since 2004 and expanded into Uganda in 2018. Renowned for their innovative approach, BGF combines tree planting with soil and water conservation, microfinance services, and community development initiatives. Their efforts are not just about planting trees but also about alleviating poverty and empowering local communities.

BGF partners with thousands of small-scale farmers, promoting sustainable agriculture by helping them grow food crops more efficiently alongside tree cultivation. One of BGF's significant contributions to the forestry sector is the publication of the Miti Magazine—the leading forestry magazine in East Africa. This publication showcases BGF's expertise and commitment to advancing professional knowledge about forestry in Africa.

Better Globe AS (BG), our Norwegian sales company founded in 2006, funds these initiatives by selling donation packages. When you donate through Better Globe, your contributions directly support BGF's reforestation projects and the educational efforts of Child Africa.

Innovative Agriculture in Northern Uganda

Transformative Programs in Northern Uganda

In 2017, Better Globe Forestry Ltd. (BGF) initiated a groundbreaking program in the Dokolo district, partnering with a local farmer organization of over 7,000 members. This initiative has embraced a holistic approach by integrating tree planting with agroforestry, microfinance, and additional income streams such as beekeeping.

Building Sustainable Practices and Capacities

The focus has been on establishing robust nurseries and educating farmers in advanced planting and soil management techniques. By integrating trees with crops like cassava, the program has not only diversified income sources but also significantly enhanced food security.

Comprehensive Community Development

Investments in training programs have empowered farmers with knowledge in income generation, land use, and environmental conservation. These efforts have improved food crop production, minimized soil erosion, and enhanced water retention across cultivated lands, showcasing a model of sustainable development that other regions could replicate.

Building Sustainable Futures

Remarkable Growth in Tree Planting

By September 2018, just nine months after initiating the nursery, over one million tree seedlings were grown and distributed to farmers, leading to a network of 16,000 partner farmers by 2022. These efforts are spearheaded by Better Globe Forestry Ltd. (BGF), funded by Better Globe AS (BG).

Sustainable Impact Through Education and Microfinance

Our comprehensive approach creates lasting ecological and economic impacts:

  • Education Initiatives: Supported by Better Globe AS, Child Africa helps ensure that children in the communities where we operate have access to quality education, fostering the next generation of leaders.
  • Microfinance Programs: Better Globe Forestry Ltd. (BGF) provides farmers with the financial resources needed to invest in their businesses and communities, enhancing their ability to practice sustainable agriculture and improve their livelihoods.

Long-Term Commitment to Climate Action

Sustaining Our Planet Through Strategic Reforestation

Fighting climate change is a marathon, not a sprint. When you donate to Better Globe, you're not just planting a tree—you're investing in a sustainable cycle of growth that extends far beyond a single action. Each Mahogany tree planted absorbs approximately 0.5 tons of CO2 over its growth period. After 15 years, these trees are harvested sustainably, and the proceeds are used to fund twice as many donation packages as initially purchased. This process repeats every 15 years, compounding the environmental and social benefits. Over a 60-year lifespan, this strategy multiplies the original donation up to 30 times, maximizing both ecological impact and community support.
