Chief Executive Officer
Born in Belgium and residing in Kenya for most of his adult life, Jean-Paul Deprins has led Better Globe Forestry since its inception in 2004. His background as the former Managing Director of Total Quality Management Leadership Ltd. in Nairobi has enriched BGF with extensive expertise in quality management and operational efficiency.
As CEO, Jean-Paul oversees the strategic direction of BGF, ensuring that every project aligns with core sustainability values. Under his leadership, BGF has partnered with thousands of farmers, initiated microfinance programs, and invested in innovative water management systems. His deep understanding of the local context and his commitment to sustainable practices have been instrumental in advancing BGF's mission to enhance environmental restoration and support local communities.
Jean-Paul is celebrated for his empathetic and effective leadership, driving forward initiatives that boost local economies and improve ecological health across Kenya.
Jan Vandenabeele
Senior Director Forestry
Originally from Belgium and now a Kenyan citizen, Jan Vandenabeele is a seasoned forester and agronomist with over 30 years of experience managing large-scale agricultural and forestry projects across Europe, Africa, South America, and Asia. Since Better Globe Forestry’s inception in 2004, he has directed research, tree selection, and planting methodologies, tailoring each initiative to local ecosystems for maximum environmental and community benefits. Over the years, he has adapted strategies to diverse climates and cultural contexts, ensuring long-lasting ecological improvements.
Previously engaged in aid-focused projects, Jan shifted to BGF’s sustainable, long-term model, recognizing its ability to maintain value beyond initial funding. His extensive expertise and unwavering commitment to practical, enduring solutions reflect his dedication to fostering resilience, prosperity, and tangible improvements in the communities and landscapes BGF serves.

Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI)
Located in Kenya, KEFRI is a state corporation established in 1986, dedicated to research in forests and related natural resources. The institute focuses on five key thematic areas: Forest Productivity and Improvement; Biodiversity and Environment Management; Forest Products Development; Socio-economics, Policy, and Governance; and Technical Support Services. KEFRI's comprehensive research efforts support sustainable forest management and conservation initiatives across the region.
Kenya Forest Service (KFS)
The Kenya Forest Service is a state corporation established in February 2007 under the Forest Act 2005. KFS is tasked with conserving, developing, and sustainably managing forest resources to enhance Kenya's socio-economic development. This partnership supports Better Globe Forestry’s mission of sustainable forestry and environmental conservation in the region.
The World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF)
The World Agroforestry Centre, also known as ICRAF, is a CGIAR Consortium Research Centre headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, with regional offices in Cameroon, India, Indonesia, Kenya, and Peru. ICRAF is committed to transforming rural life in the developing world by enabling smallholder households to enhance their livelihoods through strategic use of trees in agricultural landscapes. Their vision encompasses improvements in food security, nutrition, income, health, shelter, social cohesion, energy resources, and environmental sustainability, aligning closely with Better Globe Forestry’s initiatives in sustainable development.
Sawlog Production Grant Scheme (SPGS)
Based in Uganda, the Sawlog Production Grant Scheme funds the establishment of timber plantations and offers much more. SPGS provides professional technical advice, training, and research grants to support private growers throughout Uganda. By addressing the looming timber crisis, SPGS simultaneously tackles rural poverty, climate change mitigation, and biodiversity conservation by reducing the reliance on natural forests for timber. This multifaceted approach aligns with Better Globe Forestry’s goals of sustainable development and environmental stewardship.
Ghent University
Ghent University, located in Belgium, is a prominent institution in the Dutch-speaking region of Europe. Known for its strong commitment to social issues and pluralism, UGent operates with a broad international perspective. Second Microfinance Bank Opened
In a landmark event at the end of 2017, Better Globe Forestry opened its second microfinance bank in Kamuwongo, attended by over 600 local residents. This new institution is a beacon of hope for an area plagued by challenges like joblessness, illiteracy, and poor healthcare. The bank serves not only as a financial institution but also as a learning center for impoverished farmers, helping them overcome financial hurdles through various loans, including for solar panels, school fees, iron sheets, and water infrastructure investments.
